Section 2: We learn more about Hillari Kimble in this chapter. She is misses popular and everybody knows her. She is known cause of her mouth, the hoax, and Wayne Parr. She always complains and people hear about it 24/7. The hoax was when she tried out for cheerleadering team, made the team, then quit. She just wanted to prove that should could make it even though she really thinks cheerleaders are dumb. People also know her for dating Wayne Parr, he is the "Grand Marshall" of the school. Everybody knows him as the most popular guy due to his sheer gorgeousness. Besides his looks, he has no resume, no sports, awards, or good grades. Leo put him on Hot Seat last year and asked who is role model was. Wayne responded with the magazine GQ because he hopes to be a model one day. Then Kevin tells Leo to get the football stadium immediately. Nobody usually goes to them, the band of 14 almost outnumbers the fans. When Leo gets there he sees Stargirl playing and singing with the band on the field. When the band leaves she stays on the field and warms up with the team. Then the refs tell her to leave but she takes the ball and then kicks it. The next game hundreds show up to see some excitement, but Stargirl is a no show. The next day the leader of the cheer squad asks her to join the team. She does and everybody wonders if she'll wear the usual uniform or something crazy. Hillari's birthday is approaching and everybody is excited to see if Stargirl sings to her. The day before her birthday Hillari tells Stargirls he better not sing to her. The next day Stargirl goes over to Hilari's table and looks directly at Leo and sings to him, about Hillari. Kevin asks why Leo, and Stargirl says because he is cute. They contemplate and decide to go visit Archie. Archie is a retired paleontologist who's wife died when he was 66. At that time he moved to Mica near the high school to be around the kids. He is not a teacher but he holds informal classes and kids can come and learn about random neat things. He even has a 30 foot cactus in his backyard, called Senor Saguaro. Leo and Kevin ask him about Stargirl. He tells them that her mom started bringing her to him five years ago. He believes Stargirl is more human than everybody else in the school. The boys are confused and ask about her parents. Archie tells them that her mom is a costume designer, and that her dad works at MicaTronics like everyone else. Leo and Kevin leave and have decided to put her on Hot Seat. Archie then says "you will find out more about her by your questions, than her answers."
Clarify: Stargirl has brought excitement to the football games. Stargirl has officially joined the cheer squad. Leo and Kevin have decided to put her on Hot Seat. People actually like Stargirl and look forward to coming to school due to her presence.
Predictions: Hillari Kimble will somehow prank Stargirl. Everybody will be excited and hype for Stargirl's Hot Seat interview. Leo and Stargirl will have a little relationship.

Connections: Archie having all the fossils reminds me of when I was younger. I used to collect fossils, nothing big but still. I had shark teeth, shells, and animal claws. I remember going on a field trip in elementary and we got to excavate for fossils.

Section 3: Stargirl is suddenly the most popular girl in school. Leo can not figure out how or why either. He has three ideas though. Either do to her football cheerleading, the Hillari incident, or Dori Dilson. During football Stargirl never stops cheering for both teams and even climbs the goalpost. Hillari one day took Stargirl's rat cinnamon and dangled her over the balcony, everybody watched. Hillari dropped the rat but only onto the floor. Then, this girl named Dori Dilson, who is a ninth grade nobody, sat with Stargirl at lunch and suddenly dozens are people sit with Stargirl. Stargirl also enters a oratorical contest and wins. Everbody seems to be happy with her and happier with themselves. They imitate her much like they did with Wayne Parr. Leo talks to Archie and he says that miracles do not last long. Archie believes that Stargirl's popularity will come to an end. Then basketball season starts and Stargirl is a cheerleader. The Mica team is horrible and always loses. Stargirl cheers for every basket, for both teams, and starts cheering for people outside of the games. She cheers for whoever does something good. Then the basketball team starts winning and is undefeated. The stands are filled and the fans no longer want to just win they want to kill the other team. Stargirl true to her self continues to cheer for both teams. The Mica fans start booing her. Then on the 19th game Mica murders the other team and Stargirl leaves the gym and talks to the bus driver. The cheerleaders are mad at her for this. They tell her someone forgot something in the gym and Stargirl goes to get it. The bus then leaves without her. Stargirl finds a ride home with the janitor. The cheerleaders then say it was an accident. Stargirl believes them, and plus tomorrow is her interview on Hot Seat.
Clarify: Stargirl becomes the most popular girl at Mica high school. People then start to dislike her due to her over-cheerful attitude.
Questions: Will her popularity fade completely? Will the students not talk to her anymore? What will happen during her Hot Seat interview? Will the cheer team kick her off the team?
Predictions: The cheer squad will kick her off the team. She will lose all popularity and be hated. Hillari will become the leader of the hatred towards her.
Connections: Seeing how the fans start booing and wanting their team win so bad reminds me of our basketball games. Our students section always does chants to try to make the other team do bad and help us win.

It was named after the man who holds it. Hot Seat is on a stage and has two seats for the interviewer and the victim. Then it has a few seats for the jury, who just ask questions to the victim. Leo is in the back doing all of the sound junk. Mr. Robineau watches over the whole thing. As the interview starts it is obvious that there will be trouble. Hillari is on the jury too! People start asking Stargirl why her name is so weird, why she cheers for the other team, why she is so weird.. etc. Stargirl is unaffected and answers them. Eventually people start calling her names and such and Kevin tries to change the tone. Mr. Robineau eventually steps in and stops it all when Hillari gets the mic and makes negative comments. Mr. Robineau destroys the tape and the episode never airs. The next day the Mica basketball team has a game, it is in the state tournament. Surprisingly Stargirl cheers only for Mica. The game seems lost until the other team's best player, Ron Kovac, falls and breaks his foot. Stargirl rushes to see if he is okay. He is taken away and everybody cheers, Mica now easily wins the game. They then play Glendale who has a bunch of good players on their team. It is obvious that Mica is going to lose and the fans start to getting mad. Stargirl continues to cheer for Mica and then someone throws a tomato at her and hits her in the face. At lunch Stargirl tries to come and talk to him but he acts like he does not noticed and runs off before she could talk to him. He then spends all night thinking bout her and the rereading the letter. Leo and some kids go see Archie and tell him about the tomato scene and Archie somehow relates it to the fossil he is holding. Then at lunch Stargirl comes and talks to Leo asking for a thank you for the card she sent him. Kevin teases Leo about the crush he and Stargirl have on each other. Leo then goes to her house and is too scared to knock on the door. She comes outside and he hides behind the car. They have an awkward conversation like this for a few while Cinnamon nibbles on Leo's ear. Leo is officially in love and skips out on lunch to avoid the rumors going around about him and Stargirl. Stargirl takes Leo to her secret place in the desert. They talk about the day Leo followed her and how she knew all along. When they get to her secret place Leo is shocked to find is only a cactus and some tumbleweeds. She tries to teach Leo meditation and he can not seem to get it. Eventually he holds Cinnamon while meditating and feels one with the rat. He opens his eyes to see Stargirl in the distance. She comes back and they go off home.

While walking Stargirl to her class Leo notices that no one is looking or talking to them. At lunch he ask Kevin what is going on and Kevin tells him that people are shunning Stargirl. Since Leo is with Stargirl, he is shunned as well. Kevin explains that it all just happened naturally due to the way Stargirl acted at the basketball games. Everybody blames the loss on her, Kevin even feels this way. Nobody is talking to Stargirl except Leo and Dori Dilson, the whole thing bothers Leo but Stargirl seems to be unaffected. Leo decides to go to talk to Archie. Archie tells him about how the Amish shun members until they repent. He and Leo go to talk to Senor Saguaro and Archie translates that Leo needs to answer this question, "Who's affection do you value more, hers or the others?" Leo does not want to answer it. It is announced that Stargirl won the district oratorical contest, everybody boos but Leo. Stargirl is practicing her state speech on Leo and it seems to change each time. Leo tells her how he wants to be a TV director when he is older. She tells him that she wants to be a Silver Lunch truck driver. She wants to deliver food to all the hardworking people and bring amazing quality food to them. Leo and Stargirl go to deliver some gifts to people and Leo ask why she never signs her name to get credit. He then realizes that the porcupine necktie he received when he moved to Mica was from her. She says that her mom made it cause she could not find any. He tells her that is good to get credit sometimes for doing nice things. Stargirl simply says, "it is?" Stargirl tells Leo that she gets all her info for gifts from the newspaper. She reads the back pages, not the headlines. She reads the obituaries..etc. She reads public bulletin boards and listens to conversations at the hair salon. She asks Leo to go play the card game where at the mall they find one person and follow them for 15 minutes. Then they decide what kind of card to get them. Shunning continues in school and it fully includes Leo now. It starts to really bother Leo, but Stargirl seems unaffected. Nobody actually says bad things to either of them but they say things around them so they can still hear. Leo wishes he did not have to choose between her affection and those of others. He wishes things would change, and they do.

Eventually Stargirl finds him and asks him what he thought of the sign. She places cinnamon on Leo's shoulder and he pushes him off. Leo turns around and leaves but the next day the kids are more harsh to Leo. While doing something for a teacher Leo is in the courtyard by himself with this boy named Renshaw. He says hey to Renshaw but he is ignored. Leo talks about his feelings to Kevin and Kevin says, "you know what you did." Leo keeps avoiding Stargirl but eventually they talk. She asks him if they are breaking up. Leo says no but that something needs to change. He brings up the basketball incident and how she went to help Kovac. He says she is not connected to the normal kids and this makes her sad. Leo tries to teach her how to fit in and they talk about cliques. Stargirl asks Leo why she has to conform and he says because nobody likes her. Stargirl is hurt after this, and then two days later she disappears. After a few days Stargirl returns but no longer as Stargirl. She is Susan, and wearing hoop earrings, and nail polish. She does not have her ukulele or rat. Leo and her start doing normal things like going to movies and pizza instead of going on missions. Susan still has some learning to do so she asks for help. She creates, Evelyn Everybody, and when she is needs help she asks, "What would Evelyn do?" Leo realizes that they are still being shunned and Susan does not know why. One day she holds up a sign at school saying "Talk to me and I'll scratch your back." Nobody talks to her and she goes and cries. Stargirl then asked Mr. McShane about extinct birds cause she heard a mockingbird call out an extinct bird call. Archie said they can do this. Afterwards Stargirl started talking to Mr. McShane about how cute Leo was. They had a fun ride after that. They arrive in Phoenix and they are informed there are 38 students competing and 19 have gone so far and only 10 finalist. So Stargirl starts her speech with talking about how she might have met a Moa. The crowd loves it and she moves on. She tells Leo she does not know what to say yet and that she will have to make it up. She gives her speech and has the audience on their toes and silent. At the end of her speech she says "can you hear it?" and the audience is dead silent then erupts into applause. Stargirl wins the state competition. She receives the silver plate as her reward. Her parents come to get her and she drops the silver plate. The plate shatters and her father picks it up, but he hands it to Leo. That next monday Stargirl returns to school in her long dresses with her ukulele and rat. She plays at lunch and sets up her desk flowers again. She also gives a cookie to Hillari, even though Hillari smashes it. Leo is angry at her for giving up on being normal. She tells Leo she does not expect him to ask her to the Ocotillo ball. Then she starts a group up for ukuleles. Only Dori signs up and they play in the courtyard. People make fun of them and Leo feels as if he should go sing with them. He decides to just leave school cause it is too painful to watch. Leo does not go to the ball and does not ask Stargirl. She however goes. Leo rides his bike to the ball to spy on her and see what happens tho. He sees that all the guys are wearing the same color as Wayne, powder blue. Stargirl arrives on her bike with a 10 foot flower pedal trail behind her. Dori is pedaling leading Stargirl while wearing a tuxedo. Stargirl looks great in her yellow strapless gown. Everyone at the dance is a little timid until the "Bunny Hop" song comes on. Everybody gets behind Stargirl and copies what she does, for example the penguin walk. They then follow her outside for a little and eventually come back in. Hillari and Wayne are the only ones who do not join in. When the music stops Hillari walks up to Stargirl, tells her she ruined everything and then slaps her on the face. Stargirl then gives Hillari a polite kiss on the cheek. It had files of everyone in Mica and Leo pulls out his. It has his dislikes and likes on it. Throughout college Leo goes to see Archie and even after college. Then he becomes a director in the east so his visits are few and far between. One day though they drive out to the desert and talk about Stargirl. They stop and Archie gets out and digs a hole in the earth to bury Barney. He takes out some cement mix and fills the hole but only after place a paper with one word on it in the grave with Barney. Leo needs to clarification to what the word said. Leo eventually visits again and he finds that Archie Senor Saguaro and the shed are all gone. There is even a school where Stargirl's old meditation spot used to be. Every five years there are high school reunions and Leo does not attend. He stays in touch with Kevin who is an insurance salesman in Mica. Kevin says at one reunion they tried do the bunny hop but it wasn't the same without Stargirl. Nobody knows what happened to Hillari or Wayne, supposedly they broke up after high school. At Mica there has been some changes. There is a group now that is called the Sunflowers and they try to do one nice thing for somebody else each day. Also, at each basketball game the cheerleaders cheer for both teams. When Leo goes by his old house he sees Peter Sinkowitz. He continues to work and go on with life. She is in complete shock and drops her Silver Plate (the trophy from the contest). The plate shatters and her dad picks it up and hands it to Leo. This scene is when Stargirl finally realizes nothing is going to change and she will never get her popularity back. She runs home crying . The plate breaking symbolizes all of Stargirl's hope shattering as well.

Hillari is jealous that Stargirl stole the spotlight so she slaps her right in the middle of the dance floor. Stargirl then pulls her typical move, she kisses her on the cheek and just smiles. She then calls for Dori and Cinnamon and leaves. After that nobody ever saw her again. A week later Leo goes to her house and it is for sale and empty. He asks Archie and he has no information. Right before Leo leaves for college Archie shows him Stargirl's old office, the shed in his backyard. It had files of everyone in Mica, including Leo. Then 15 years go by and Leo is a TV director in the east. He comes back to Mica to visit Archie but he, the cactus, and the shed are gone. He goes by Stargirl's old enchanted place and an Elementary school is there. Kevin tells him that at the high school reunions they tried to recreate the bunny hop but it is not the same. Leo leaves and he then receives a package in the mail on his birthday. The package contains a porcupine necktie. DUN DUN DUHHH
Theme(s):
Society and Class- Stargirl is constantly rejected by the kids at Mica High School. They do not like her simply because she is different and does not fit in to the other kids. This example is exactly what society as a whole does. Society likes to force people to conform and being normal. For example, if somebody does not go to college it is almost as if they are evil and a sinner. People have this mindset that they have to do everything by the book and be like everybody else, simply because that is what they are told. Stargirl is her own person and truly cares for the people around her. Society and the idea of class has no effect on the way she thinks or treats people. In the real world however, a lot of times it does.
Wisdom and Knowledge- In this story Stargirl and Archie/Saguaro are the real holders of wisdom. Everybody goes to Archie and his cactus for advice even though they are not teachers. Stargirl makes the other kids question themselves and their motives forcing them to think about the way they are acting in a way they never had before. When Leo goes to talk to Archie about Stargirl he is looking for answers, but Archie only gives him questions. By giving Leo the right questions he makes his mind think more and more truly understand the situation. The unconventional teachings of Archie and Stargirl help kids to look at things in a whole new way. The wisdom bestowed upon these Mica students will hopefully make them one day become teachers as well in the same sense as Archie and Stargirl.
Identity- In the story it is apparent that Stargirl is very different from the rest of the Mica students. We see the classifications of kids early on, with how Hillari and Wayne are the "popular" ones. Also, how Dori Dilson is the "nobody" or the "loser" kid. Everybody follows the trends and tries to be like the cool kids in this story. Nobody besides Stargirl and Dori have their own identity. At the ball all the boys wore powder blue just because Wayne was doing it. The reason people do not like Stargirl is because she can not be put into a box, she does not fit a certain stereotype. The only way to describe Stargirl is "weird" but what really is weird? To Stargirl being "normal" and acting like everyone else is weird. It is obvious that Stargirl's role at Mica helped some kids find their true self. The school even started a club called the Sunflowers which sort of helps kids become themselves.
Motif(s):
Ukulele - The first day Stargirl comes to Mica she plays her ukulele and sings during lunch. She is free of judgment in her mind and does not care what others think. The ukulele is the piece of Stargirl that is care free and happy. The ukulele again comes up when Stargirl returns from being Susan. Stargirl creates a ukulele group and her and Dori play in the courtyard.
Porcupine Necktie - Leo in the beginning of the story receives a porcupine necktie from his uncle before he leaves for Arizona. He also receives one in the mail from a mysterious stranger on his 14th birthday. At the end of the story, 15 years after high school Leo receives a porcupine necktie in the mail on his birthday. He knows that it is from Stargirl. I think the necktie represents wonder, and who Leo truly is. He talks about it at the beginning of the story when he is young and still has big dreams and is true to himself. He then sees it at the end of the story again when he has learned to not care what people think and live life how he wants to live it. He again wonders about Stargirl after the necktie arrives.
Symbol(s):
Silver Plate - Stargirl has a vision of her winning the state oratorical contest and coming home to a school full of fans. She thinks winning the contest will bring her popularity back and everyone will like her again. She is so ready to win just for this to happen. So when she gets the Silver Plate it is like hope that there is still a chance people will like her. When she arrives home to nobody but two teachers, Stargirl is crushed. She drops the plate and it shatters. This is when all of her hope is lost and she breaks down and cries. This is also the climax of the story. Without all hope lost, Stargirl does random things like offering back scratches for friends.
Senor Saguaro - Senor Saguaro symbolizes wisdom. It helps reveal truth but also wonder. When Archie ask the cactus for advice he is really just helping kids figure everything out by themselves. The cactus "tells" the kids what kind of questions to ask and think about, which in turn symbolizes wisdom and truth.
"Susan" - In the story when Stargirl tries to fit in she becomes "Susan." Susan is Stargirl's view of society. Susan represents how society wants people to conform and fit in with the crowd. Susan shows up to school wearing hoop earrings, designer cloths, and lip-gloss. Stargirl sees all of the impurities of the kids around her and tries to put them upon herself when she becomes Susan. It goes to show that society rejects anyone or anything that is different than the normal. Society wants people to fall in line, and if anybody falls out of line, shun them or make them feel unwanted. Susan is the sickness that is American society.
Tone(s):
Jealous - Jerry Spinelli writes in a way that he is almost in awe of Stargirl. He is constantly talking about how Stargirl is truly smarter than everyone else and knows herself better than anyone else. Especially when we look at it through how Leo and Archie view Stargirl is this tone apparent. Archie tells Leo that every once in a while someone comes along who is a little more primitive and more in touch with themselves. Leo asks Archie if Stargirl is weird and he says that maybe she is the normal one and everyone else are the weird ones. By these subtle comments the reader can see that Spinelli is in awe and a little jealous of Stargirl.
Cheerful - Despite all that happens to Stargirl, she always seems to stay happy. It seems as if the narrator is always happy throughout the story. Especially in the end, despite not seeing Stargirl for 15 years Leo is still happy. He does not have a family of his own but he does not feel alone. Stargirl also throughout the story is always happy no matter what. She gets made fun of on Hot Seat and just laughs and calmly answers the harsh questions. She sings happy birthday even though Hillari threatened her. She smiles and kisses Hillari right after she is slapped by her. It seems like in the end nothing can truly get to Stargirl.
Mood(s):
Depressing- It is almost impossible to read this story and not feel bad for Stargirl. I can honestly say that I was depressed and sad a little throughout this whole story. Seeing how badly people ended up treating Stargirl is terrible to read. All of the oppression and cruelty she goes through makes the story have a very depressing mood. Especially when Stargirl was hit in the face with a tomato. Also, when Hillari slapped her while she was having a good time at the dance. One of the saddest part of the book was when Stargirl was on The Hot Seat and everyone was making rude comments and telling her how weird she is.
Upbeat- This book keeps the reading on their toes. While reading I never knew what was going to happen next, I couldn't set the book down. The transitions from boring to exciting was so flawless like Leo and Stargirl talking about their future to Stargirl getting hit with a tomato. The book also progresses very fast keeping the feel of the book upbeat and fast. Stargirl goes from being weird, to the most popular, to the most hated girl in school in what seems like a matter of a few pages. The anticipation and pace of the book is what makes it have a upbeat mood.

Characterization:
Stargirl- Susan Caraway is introduced to us when Leo starts to hear rumors around school about the new girl. Stargirl is a round character, due to the fact that we spend the whole book trying to truly understand her. She does things at random and out of spite, it confuses everyone. She comes to school on her first day singing and playing a ukulele during lunch. She puts flowers and a tablecloth on her desk in each class. She even sings happy birthday to every kid in school at lunch. These things deeply confuse the Mica high school student demographic. Nobody can quite understand her, Leo and some other kid even go to Archie to ask him about her. Archie himself does not fully understand her either, all he can do is offer the idea that maybe she is one people should strive to be like. Stargirl goes through all kinds of oppression from being left at a basketball game, hit with a tomato, kicked off the cheer team, and even slapped in the face. Stargirl continues to stay true to herself all the way to the end of the story and does not let others tell her what to do or how to act. She becomes Susan for a while but quickly comes back. Stargirl is I hope to be one day.
Leo- Leo Borlock is definitely a dynamic character. He is dynamic because we see a definite change in him by the end of the story. When we first meet Leo he is the typical high school kid, trying to fit in and worries about what people think about him. As soon as Stargirl comes to town however we start to see him slowly step out of his box. He starts dating Stargirl and he suddenly does not care what people think, he is singing, dancing, meditating, and delivering gifts to people. Despite this, he eventually realizes that people start to not like him due to this. He is so worried about what others think of him he forgets what truly matters. In the end of the story he loses Stargirl and she disappears on him. It is obvious however that Stargirl leaves a lasting impression on him. He drops change, reads the fillers of the newspaper, meditates, sings in public, and most importantly cares less what people think of him. Leo's mind is opened up and he is more open to new ideas and the world by the end of the story.
Kevin- Even though Kevin is always apparent throughout the story we do not know much about him. He is a static and flat character. He does not go through much change and is not really important to the story in the grand scheme of things. We can see that he is just like every other high school kid in the fact that he listens to the popular kids and cares too much what others think. He even starts to blame Stargirl for them losing the basketball game, and even gets mad at Leo for dating Stargirl. The only real thing we ever learn about Kevin is that he is a bad friend. He ends up becoming a insurance salesman and living in Mica for the rest of his life
Archie- We first see meet Archie when Kevin and Leo decide to go confront him about Stargirl. We learn he is a ex-paleontologist who now lives by Mica high school so he can teach kids about life and fossils. He spends his time teaching kids about random things, he allows everyone to come to his house at anytime. He is the all-seeing-eye, he is the wisdom and advice giver throughout the story. Leo constantly goes to him for advice on how to deal with the way people treat him and Stargirl. Leo also asks Archie about Stargirl and why she is different. Archie is dynamic, we see him change as well as Leo. He learns a little about himself when Stargirl leaves. He learns that some things are more important than others perceptions. He eventually buries his most praised fossil Barney and returns him back to the earth. He then too returns to the earth, as we can infer that he has passed away when Kevin returns and he is gone.
Hillari Kimble- The main antagonist in the story, Hillari Kimble, constantly causes problems. She is a static character due to the fact that she does not change, she just stays a brat. From the first day Stargirl shows up she already spread rumors that she has to be a fake. She then tells Stargirl not to sing to her and tells people to stay away from Stargirl. She even takes Stargirl's rat and pretends to drop it off the balcony in front of the whole school. The worst thing she does however is when she slaps Stargirl in the face after the ball. She is so jealous of Stargirl despite her anger, she is mad that Stargirl takes the attention away from her.
